Maya got lost and found
I’m sure she was scared. Wandering around the streets of Colorado Springs in June 2007 and not knowing where to go or what to do. Especially since she was only about 4 months old. I’m still amazed that someone could be that careless. But when I really think about it, I’m sure it wasn’t carelessness at all that resulted in little Maya wandering the streets by herself. Instead, I’m sure it was the result of some heartless individual just taking little Maya from her home and mother and dropping her off in the middle of nowhere so they wouldn’t have to take care of her. Or maybe she didn’t show the aggressive nature they wanted her to have so they couldn’t fight her. Whatever the reason, there she was wandering the streets when she was picked up by the Humane Society. Now in her new metal-barred home and playing with her new found puppy roommate, I’m sure Maya was just happy to be around people and another energetic puppy.
My girlfriend and I had visited the Humane Society a couple of times prior to seeing Maya. We love dogs and took every opportunity to visit them at the shelter. The day we saw Maya, we fell in love. We had to have her. We immediately placed a hold on Maya to be first in line to have a shot at adopting her. Policy at the Humane Society is that every animal that is found (not dropped off) must stay at the Humane Society for a week before they can be adopted. So for an entire week my girlfriend and I visited Maya everyday to observe her temperament and behavior around other dogs. Finally, we were given the opportunity to visit with Maya and introduce her to 6 year old Miniature Pincher (Toby). Things went great, of course, and we snagged Maya up and introduced her to our family. I can still remember the day she came running around the corner while we were sitting at he desk filling out her paperwork to greet us. She was so adorable with her fat little body. For her ride home I sat with her in the back of the Wrangler to make sure she wasn’t scared during her first car ride.
